![]() | General Assistance and Emergency Aid General Assistance is a cooperative effort between the Township and residents who have limited resources or none. General Assistance provides for the basic needs of residents who are unemployed or disabled and who have no other forms of income or assets. New Trier Township administers General Assistance on a needs allowance basis, meaning that the need must exist before funds are provided. General Assistance may also cover medical benefits as defined by Township guidelines. Working With Others We have strong working relationships with agencies that provide housing, counseling, family therapy, mental health treatment, and many other services. We also work closely with social workers from the police departments. We are linked with the Illinois Department of Human Services to obtain status information on cases much more quickly and efficiently. If you know a New Trier Township resident who needs assistance or general information regarding social services, please call the Social Services Administrator at (847) 446-8201 for a confidential interview. |
Who is Eligible ? A Township resident 18 years of age or older who is without income and ineligible for any other forms of assistance. How Does A Resident Apply ? A General Assistance application can be obtained upon request by mail, telephone, or in person from the Township Social Services Office. When the Social Services Administrator receives an application, an appointment is scheduled and the applicant is informed of the documentation required. The applicant will have a written decision no later than 30 days from the date the Township receives the signed application. Meantime, the Social Services Administrator will help with referrals to other services including The Pantry. How Long Can GA Funds Be Received ? Benefits can be received until another source of income becomes available. If the recipient is disabled, GA can be received until Supplemental Security Income is approved. If a recipient is able to work, Township guidelines require a verified job search along with community work placement until employment is obtained. |
