Caring Neighbors Sought for Township Holiday Sharing Programs

MP900409388

As the holiday shopping season unfolds this year, New Trier Township is asking residents to consider adding a neighbor in need to the holiday gift list. Each year New Trier Township government organizes a gift giving program that provides struggling families with gifts for their children and food bags for seniors on fixed incomes.

"This holiday season, many families in Glencoe, Winnetka, Kenilworth, Northfield, Glenview and Wilmette will gather around tables laden with celebratory foods followed by gift giving that makes children’s eyes bright," notes Supervisor Patricia B. Cantor. "Yet for hundreds of individuals and families on limited incomes in New Trier Township, the holidays are little more than a dream as they struggle between paying housing costs, utility bills and food."

"We have been fortunate that in past years caring neighbors have stepped forward to purchase gifts for children or make donations to our Angel Fund," noted Cantor.   "We are reaching out again this year asking residents to consider making a difference to a neighbor in need," she adds.

The New Trier Township Holiday Sharing Program is two-fold. One program, Caring Neighbors, matches a sponsor with a child under the age of 18, or an entire family if the sponsor so desires, and provides them with a list. The list includes two items that are needed and two items that the child wishes for. Among the more commonly needed items are clothing, such as jeans, or a Pace or Metra pass to assist students with getting to and from school. Wished for items can include gift cards, games, or a sports team t-shirt.  There is not a fixed dollar amount but donors are asked for a commitment to purchase at least two of the four requested items.   While not required, a gift card for parents is well appreciated as well.  Interested sponsors are asked to contact the Social Services Administrator at 847-446-8201. Gifts will be due to the Township office by December 16th. The gifts are distributed by Township staff in private appointments with the recipients.

The Township also has an Angel Fund,
a registered 501(c) (3) corporation that is funded solely with cash donations.  During the holidays, monies are used to purchase grocery items and assemble holiday food bags for seniors in need. Formed in 1995, the Angel Fund has provided support year-round to hundreds of eligible residents to overcome traumatic socioeconomic circumstances with emergency financial assistance to pay for food, shelter, utility bills, clothing, medical care and other services selected to meet specific identified needs. In August, the Angel Fund provides gift cards to income eligible students to assist with the purchase of back to school supplies. This year 500 students were in need and received the cards.  Monies are also used to supplement donations to the Pantry when needed. Donations can be made to New Trier Township Angel Fund and mailed to 739 Elm Street, Winnetka, Illinois 60093. More information can be obtained by calling 847-446-82201.
