Local Food Pantries to Benefit from Oakton Community College Empty Bowls Fundraiser

New Trier Township Food Pantry along with Niles Township, Northfield Township, and Maine Township Food Pantries, Interfaith Action of Evanston and Des Plaines Self Help Closet and Pantry will be the recipients of proceeds from an upcoming Empty Bowls fundraiser to be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Oakton Community College, 1600 East Golf Road, Des Plaines. The event, which is sponsored by the Ceramics Club and supported by the Oakton Community College student government association, focuses on hunger issues locally and around the world. Empty Bowls is a non-profit global movement which raises money for food banks, soup kitchens and other meal programs.
Area residents are invited to participate by making a $15 donation and selecting a hand crafted ceramic bowl to keep. Chicago area professional and student potters contribute the ceramic bowls. Each participant will receive a simple meal of soup and bread, which is intended to remind attendees that someone’s bowl is always empty.  Since 2004, the OCC event has sold 13,000 handmade bowls and raised nearly $184,000 for local food charities. The New Trier Township Food Pantry has been a recipient of funding from the OCC Empty Bowls fundraiser since 2010.
In addition to the meal, there will be a raffle in which attendees can win ceramic artwork and larger pieces. Entertainment will be provided by Patchouli, an acoustic duo whose songs about harmony and healing inspire the human spirit.
