New Trier Township Accepting Applications for Child Care Financial Assistance Program

ChildCare
August 1, 2011 deadline to apply.

Families struggling to pay the high cost of child care may be eligible to apply for a New Trier Township financial assistance program that helps low and moderate income families pay for child care expenses while the adults are working, looking for work, or in an approved training program. To be eligible for the program, an applicant’s income must be within certain guidelines. The program has been funded by New Trier Township government since 1993.

"Paying for child care has been a challenge for working parents long before the current recession, and families with fewer economic resources have always paid disproportionally more for child care," said Cantor. For many parents the cost of care can range from 8 to more than 25 percent of the families income, she added.

"We continue to see an increase in families that are in economic distress and have responded to this need by increasing funding for this program at a time when many government units are cutting programs," noted Patricia B. Cantor, Township Supervisor. Last year, 55 children participated in the program.

Applications for the Fiscal 2012 program are available online and at the Township Office located at 739 Elm Street in Winnetka.   Residents may also call 847-446-8202 to have one mailed. The Township will accept applications from July 15, 2011 through August 1, 2011. Following the deadline, applications will be reviewed and given consideration based on available funding.

"We believe by providing partial financial assistance for child care, this Township program addresses a real need in our communities by enabling parents to maintain or seek employment while also providing peace of mind knowing that their children are being well taken care of," concluded Cantor. To learn more about the program, visit the Township’s website or call the Social Services Administrator at 847-446-8201.
