Youth in Winnetka pitch in with products for the food drive.

WINNETKA, June 21, 2010 - On Friday, June 25th from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. volunteers and staff from New Trier Township Government will encourage shoppers at The Grand Food Center in Glencoe to purchase needed items for the New Trier Township Pantry.  The volunteers will also be on hand at The Grand Food Center in Winnetka on Friday, July 16th from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
"We are most appreciative of the support of the owners, managers, and staff of The Grand Food Center in coordinating this food and fund drive for the Pantry," said Patricia B. Cantor, Supervisor, New Trier Township Government.  No donation is too small – all are appreciated, especially in the summer months when donations begin to fall off and the Pantry shelves become bare, adds Cantor.
The New Trier Township Pantry has seen a steady increase in demand for emergency food assistance over the past 18 months. More than 100 bags filled with goods leave the Pantry each week.
"A rising proportion of those requesting food assistance are working families with children, where one or both incomes may have been lost and they are struggling to keep a roof over their heads," she confirmed. "It’s difficult to imagine that our neighbors in New Trier Township may not have the resources to feed their families or provide for their basic needs," added Cantor.
The New Trier Township Food Pantry provides food and basic necessities to people in need in New Trier Township. Established in 1965, the New Trier Township Food Pantry serves as a bridge between those who have the ability to give and those who are in need. Through volunteer efforts the shelves are stocked with a variety of canned and packaged food, frozen foods, useful paper goods, and toiletry items for all ages.
The Pantry is supported solely by donations from the public either through individual donations or organized food and fund drives.
The Food Pantry is open to qualified residents of New Trier Township, which includes the villages of Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, and Glencoe, plus portions of Glenview and Northfield. In order to qualify for assistance, a social worker meets with the individual making the request and determines if they are eligible for assistance.
