New Trier Township Expands Community Support Grants Program for Persons with Disabilities

September 27, 2010 – New Trier Township is increasing funding and expanding the eligibility criteria for its Community Support Grants Program for Persons with Disabilities. The Township Board has increased to $75,000 the amount of funding for the program which will provide approximately 50 grants or more to qualifying Township residents.
"The Community Support Grants Program was developed in 2007 as a direct result of our strategic plan which identified a need in the Township to support the disability community with a self-directed service model," notes Patricia B. Cantor, Supervisor. "Since implementing this innovative program, a stakeholder-driven process has examined how to expand and enhance the program to enable individuals with disabilities to have more choices in determining how they live and the services they receive," she adds.
Since its inception, the Community Support Grants program has provided 114 grants of up to $1,500 each. The grants were issued to adults and children with disabilities to help with services such as speech and occupational therapy, assistive equipment and specialized activities. While the program has no age or income restrictions it had been limited to persons with severe disabilities. This year the criteria for eligibility have been expanded to include a wider variety of disabilities, including physical impairments. A fact sheet which outlines all the eligibility criteria, as well as an application, can be found on-line at or can be requested by calling 847-446-8202.

Applications will be accepted through November 15, 2010. Applications must be submitted to the Township office by 5:00 p.m. or postmarked no later than November 15, 2010. A lottery drawing of all eligible applications will be held on November 30, 2010. All applicants will be notified by mail by December 6, 2010 as to whether or not they have been selected.
