New Trier Township Government Announces Volunteerism and Community Service Awards

Winnetka, April 6, 2010New Trier Township Government will recognize several individuals for their contributions to the quality of life in New Trier Township and its residents at the Annual Town Meeting on April 13, 2010.

The George E. Noyes Community Spirit Award will be presented to Sandra Berger of Winnetka. The George E. Noyes Community Spirit Award recognizes outstanding Township volunteers who are making a powerful difference in their communities in ways that support New Trier Township’s mission and strategic direction, and who inspires others to volunteer. The award was established in 2006 in memory of George E. Noyes who served as Township Collector from 2002 until 2006. A tireless worker, Noyes displayed a sustained commitment to civic participation during his lifetime. The award is designed to honor those who demonstrate his spirit of service, citizenship and responsibility. Berger, a 25-plus year resident of Winnetka, will be recognized for her extraordinary volunteer service to Village governance.

Don Trieschmann of Winnetka will accept the Friend of the Township Award on behalf of Rebuilding Together – North Suburban Chicago. The group of volunteers has built shelves for the expanding Township Pantry to hold items such as paper towels, toilet tissue, and laundry detergent — which cannot be purchased with food stamps, but are necessary items in everyday living.   Pantry volunteers Jane Gallery, Frank Craven & Jesse Marymont of Winnetka; and Mary Louise & Derek Schram of Wilmette will be presented the Supervisor’s Award. Pantry volunteersLynette Stone, Beth Kurensky, Suzanne Conley, and Martha Gallo, all of Winnetka will also be recognized for their service in the Pantry.

The Superior Service to Persons with Disabilities will be presented to Sean Clemenz and Julie Smith, Special Education Faculty at New Trier High School. This award recognizes an individual or an organization (corporation, non-profit organization, governmental body or place of worship) for efforts that go above and beyond their normal job duties and responsibilities in providing contributions and advocacy efforts of a significant nature on behalf of persons with disabilities living in New Trier Township.

New Trier High School Senior, Kristina Spillers of Wilmette will be awarded the Peer Jury Scholarship. She will read her winning essay on her peer jury experience.

The public is encouraged and welcome to attend. The meeting will be held at the Takiff Center at 999 Green Bay Road in Glencoe. The Takiff Center is located at the site of the former North School. Parking is available behind the building and is accessible to northbound traffic by turning right just past the intersection of Green Bay Road and Vernon Avenue.
