New Trier Township Opens for 2010 Tax Appeals

The Cook County Board of Review announced this week that New Trier Township will be open for 2010 Property Tax Appeals on Thursday, March 24 through Friday, April 22. The Township Assessor’s office will again offer assistance to residents wishing to file an appeal.

The grounds for appeal and the supporting data needed for each are:

  1. An ERROR IN SQUARE FOOTAGE of the house or lot. A survey is required as proof based on measurements of the exterior of the house excluding basement, garage and unfinished attic.
  2. An ASSESSMENT THAT IS MORE THAN 10% OF CURRENT MARKET VALUE of your property. A recent open market sale (not a short sale or foreclosure) or an appraisal is required as proof.
  3. LACK OF UNIFORMITY WITH SIMILAR PROPERTIES in your class and neighborhood code. Comps should be +/- 10% in square footage, similar construction and age. You are looking for a similar house with a lower $ per square foot assessment than yours.

Those wishing to appeal are asked to simply call the Township office at (847) 446-8200 and leave their name, address and phone number to request comparables be mailed to them. Those filing based on a recent sale or appraisal need only attach their evidence to the appeal form. Completed appeals must be filed directly with the Board of Review office by mail or at the Skokie Courthouse.

The appeal form and more detailed instructions for filing are available online at www.cookcountyboardofreview.com or in our office at 739 Elm Street, Winnetka. No appointment is necessary
