Our Pantry Helps Neighors Make Ends Meet

The Food Pantry is open by appointment only to qualified residents of New Trier Township, which includes the villages of Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, and Glencoe, plus portions of Glenview and Northfield. The Pantry is located at the Township Office, 739 Elm Street in Winnetka, just east of Green Bay Road near the Metra station.

Established in 1965, the New Trier Township Food Pantry serves as a bridge between those who have the ability to give and those who are in need.   Through donations from the community and volunteer efforts the shelves are stocked with a variety of canned and packaged food, frozen foods, useful paper goods, laundry detergent and toiletry items. A freezer is stocked with vegetables, meat, poultry, and nutritious frozen dinners.

In order to qualify for assistance, a social worker meets with the individual making the request and determines if they are eligible for assistance. At that time, the social worker can also inform the individual of other assistance programs.

If you are a New Trier Township resident in need, or if you know of a resident in need, please call Jeanne Winsted Rosser, Social Services Administrator at 847-446-8201 for a confidential interview. The office hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. A voice mail message can be left at any time.

What We Need

New Trier Township is consistently ranked among the wealthiest areas in the United States. Adversity, however, knows no boundaries. Our clients face job loss, devastating illness, divorce, underemployment or other unforseen life circumstances that prompt them to seek our assistance. If you would like to help a neighbor in-need, please review the pantry needs list below:

Where We Get Our Food

The township pantry is primarily supported by donations from the public (individual donors) or organized food and fund drives. A small line item allocation is available within the township budget to purchase food through local vendors. No donation is too small- all are appreciated.

Despite an improving economy and lower unemployment rates, many of our clients are working several part-time jobs, or are now underemployed after the Great Recession. Your township food pantry presently serves the needs of over 100 households per month, representing about 250 persons. The supplemental groceries and personal care items our clients receive are making a tremendous difference in their lives, while strengthening the communities we serve.
