Text-A-Tip- Usage Report at 6-Months
Over six months have passed since the public launch of Text-A-Tip in New Trier Township on March 14, 2016. The last update report generated during the summer months showed diminished usage. As school resumed during late August/early September, a slight uptick in system usage occurred, taking our grand total to 97 clients that generated 1,027 texts for the period covering 3/14/16—9/30/16.
During September 2016, five students generated a total of 31 text exchanges with counselors.
At the six-month mark, the following topical trends (reasons students are using the Text-A-Tip system) were cited by the students as their primary concerns:
1. Sad/Depressed 11.3%
2. Friend/Relationship Conflict 10.5%
3. Drugs 6.2%
4. Self Harm/Cutting (Other) 6.2%
Other trends closely following these factors include angst over bullying (non-cyber and other), peer pressure/expectations, and knowledge of suicidal ideations. The complete statistical report has specific breakdowns of topics that collected lesser percentages during this study period.
LEAD and New Trier Township will be hosting a meeting with education, social services and law enforcement partners to discuss the initial impact of Text-A-Tip during November 2016 (date TBD). We will also discuss communications tactics to keep the service in the forefront of students’ minds (and their parents/guardians), and build/reinforce awareness with community members.
I encourage you to share these findings and discuss Text-A-Tip with your colleagues, parents, students, or other community partners that may benefit from it. Your observations, questions, concerns, or ideas are valued and welcome.
