Living in Winnetka since 1974, John Thomas has done community service for thirty years - in elected offices, on pro-bono boards and aiding recovering addicts. He has also been on several public and private corporate Boards. He and his wife Ellen have two married sons who went through New Trier H.S. Thomas attended both The University of Michigan College of Engineering, and the School of Business Administration, earning a BS and MBA in Operations Management.
Thomas is currently an elected Winnetka Park Commissioner, chairing their Audit and their Parks and Beaches Committees. Now in his 14th year on the Winnetka Plan Commission, he was also Caucus Council Chair and was on the Zoning Board of Appeals. Thomas was 2016 Rotary Club president, organizing and chairing two candidate forums for the 2016 contested Winnetka Village Trustee elections.
His pro-bono work began in 1987 chairing the Winnetka Youth Organization where he still is on the Board. Later he chaired the Winnetka/Northfield United Way and the United Way North Shore board. He was also a Board, Executive and Audit Committee Member of the Northern Illinois Girl Scouts. In 2016 he was chosen Winnetka/Northfield Man of the Year.
Thomas believes the New Trier Township greatly improves community life through carefully considered grants to agencies, a food pantry, a community support program and other important services. He was very pleased to be elected Township Trustee in a hotly contested 2017 election in the spring of 2017.
